The Queen As Temple Dancer Poem by Sheena Blackhall

The Queen As Temple Dancer

Today at the opening of parliament,
To celebrate Queen Victoria's love of India
The current queen will be dressed as an Indian temple dancer

She will be dressed in silk,
With golden borders, a saree held by a waist chain
She will be adorned with henna tattoos on her hands and feet
Flowers in her hair
150 tinkling bells at her ankles

Away with crimpolene!
Away with sensible shoes!
Away with lampshade hats and frumpy knickers!
See how she gyrates to the temple drum!
