The Soldier's Letter Poem by Brittany Clark

The Soldier's Letter

Through tear-filled eyes, a soldier stares
At the smoke and wreckage that surrounds him.
In his heart, he wonders if anyone cares
About him and what he does.
No one writes him, no one says
How they appreciate
That he does his best
And fights for the U.S.A.
Does anyone know that he risks his life?

He has no family, no kids or wife.
And he feels alone in the world.
Maybe he should give up.
It’d be so easy to end it all.
Who would know, who would care
If, suddenly, one day, he just wasn’t there?

That night, he receives an envelope.
He opens it and finds a letter that a child wrote.
“I want to thank, ” it reads,
“For fighting in the war to save me.”
Just a simple message, but the soldier knows
That now someone cares whether he stays or goes.
Now he’ll keep fighting and never forget
About that letter from a child so innocent.
