The monastery sat high on a hill closer to heaven,
Four tired buildings facing each other forming a
Square with a grass covered courtyard containing
Pretty border flowers seeking God’s forgiveness.
Poppies gazed from a farmer’s field mingling with
Corn surrounded by broken hedges that once
Formed a fairly straight line.
What took us by surprise was the silence. The only
Sound was birdsong rising above the breeze,
And the absence of monks distorted the picture,
Presumably they were at prayer or working in their
Vegetable or herb garden. A bell sounded like an
Orchestra in the silence of the day as the world
Turned another page.
Or was it the ghosts of the past settling around you, the silence of the dead! ! ! ! A lovely gentle poem thanks for sharing BB : O)
I love this poem. It speaks of a time when peace was at the foremost of things. We have a monastery out in the country where I live. Silence is golden as the saying goes. Enjoyed this write. So soothing!
You paint a lovely scene here David, one of peace and tranquility.
Serenety of words and clarity in your poem sat high near to heaven as I think love you
As if your hand full of colors and paint, you did a nice painting by pasting words on canvas for poetry vibrant! nice n beautiful_Soul
