Tutorial For David De Santis

Rating: 5.0

I read some poetry today
by long dead poets from the past,
which I enjoyed I have to say.
Their golden words were meant to last
.
Though they long since returned to dust.
The legacy they left behind
for poetry students is a must.
It is as if they were designed.

To act as templates we can use
as we learn to write poetry
It would be foolish to refuse
to benefit from history.

So find a poet you admire
from the past or present day
You might just find his works inspire
you to write a different way.

Experiment with every kind,
free form, free verse, formality
then in due course you’re sure to find
which one of these is your forte

The time you spend to learn the rules
is one investment you must make
Like any trade you need the tools,
Before you can attempt to make

your claim to be a master bard.
The road to fame is long and hard
with very little cash reward.
you have to try, no one is barred.

Your poem is full of wisdom we can all benefit from. At the same time you send out a wonderful poetic charm which makes me wonder which poet from the past inspired you. You certainly inspire me, my poet friend. A '10! ' Warm Wishes, Marilyn

This is a wonderful write Ivor, as always. It contains such great advice. I particularly like the verse about finding a poet you admire and you might be inspired to write a different way. This is so true. I suppose there are almost as many styles as there are poets. It is wise to take note of those whose works have stood the test of time. Thanks Richard

I too agree with you, Ivor! I know why you have picked David Desantis from the lot. For he is one of the best young writers to have emerged on this friendly poem site... David as I find has tremendous imaginative skills. His poems talk with the readers freely. They exhibit much in-depth in their concepts. I am sure he will mature into a very good writer. And your poem, this, provides good meaningful read in style…

I do agree ivor that we can learn from the poets of the past, just as they were influenced by their pasts, but to be a contemporary writer of this 21st Century takes living in it and adapting our form, style, etc to that century. Yes the forms set down by the great are fantastic tools but nothing is barred or the perfect way in my mind. Free form is ours to cherish, as to poetry being hard work? lol It can be and forced poetry is painful to read but most of the best poetry comes so easily to the poets pen, time and time again. I am sure David will appreciate your pointers though, there is always something to learn! Smiling at you, Tai
