Looking out the window but not really seeing,
Sitting in a trance-like state lost in thought.
The rhythm of the rails has a hypnotic effect,
The scenery rushes past and is gone in a flash -
My memory and recollection of what I have seen
Goes just as fast as the passing hedges and ditches.
The pretty young woman sitting opposite me
Appears to smile so I smile back – but -
The eyes are glazed over – she's looking
In my direction but doesn't even see me!
She's just the same as me – lost in her world.
The smile suggests she is at least thinking
Happy thoughts – sadly just not about me!
I can hear the man in the seat behind
Aimlessly turning his newspaper pages -
Giving the impression of reading -
But I don't believe it!
Sitting in a railway carriage full of people
Yet each of us oblivious of each other -
All lost in a conscious unconscious state,
Each of us lost in our own train of thought.
Disregarding all others but ourselves
Does this suggest -
That we are only interested in ourselves?

Excellent poem, made me smile at you portrayal of others on the train with you. Interesting look at other people and how we all tend to become unconscious while following our own train of thought. You have succinctly and poignantly shown what is going on around you and detailing it in an enjoyable poem. Enjoyed reading this one! Thank you for sharing. RoseAnn
