A Mimic Called Tim Poem by Stephen Katona

A Mimic Called Tim

Rating: 3.0

There was an octopus called Tim,
Who thought there was no-one like him.
When he swam from the reef,
He changed beyond belief.
To look like a lion-fish,
A far too dangerous dish,
For even a shark.
'I'm a clever mimic, ' he'd remark,
To the fearful fish in the sea,
'No-one would dare attack me.
I can make myself flat,
To blend with sand just like that,
Or with one arm make,
A poisonous sea snake.
If a large eel comes looking for a meal,
I can lose all my appeal,
By changing into a fish of jelly,
To avoid entering his belly.'
There was an octopus called Tim,
But don't mention there's others like him.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I'm a big fan of the mimic octopus. It can mimic the shape, texture, and behaviour of lion-fish, sea-snakes, flat fish and jelly fish to evade predators.

A flight of fancy under the sea - and very visual for the reader. It would sound great read aloud too and children (of all ages) would listen wide-eyed!
