Ginger Hair (Lyric) Poem by Margaret Kollmer

Ginger Hair (Lyric)

My father comes from London
En Ma sy’s van de Aar
My Ma say sê mos ‘Dankie’
And Pater: ‘Ever so ta! ’

I started school in Kommetjie
Then on to Boksburg High
Where they taught me how to spraak the taal
And make a lekker braai.

Chorus: Dis ‘n half-en-half ou wereld
In dié Suid Afrika
Where did I get my ginger hair
From London or de Aar?

Now Ma makes Pater’s collars
All starched around the seams
But for herself she only wears
Those stywe-pap crimplenes.

My Ma sy skreeu so baie
Daar by die Soccer Test
But Pater says: ‘I say! I say!
My tiddly winks are best’.

Chorus:

As Ma maak lekker potjie
Then Pater hardly speaks
He only wants his cabbage cooked
Until it blooming well squeaks.

I find it so confusing
But maybe dis tog goed
I darem have to eat my wors
With beef and Yorkshire Pud.

Chorus:

Now Ma’s a bottle blondie
And Pater’s pate is bare …
So I’ll never ever know just where
I got my ginger hair!
