Hearing The School Children Poem by Paula Glynn

Hearing The School Children

Hearing the school children
I am reminded of my own days in the playground
Where I would laugh and play
Knowing how to keep aggressive kids at bay.

Hearing the school children
I wonder what they are shouting
What they are screaming about
What they are demanding from the other kids.

Hearing the school children
I wonder what they learn day-in-day-out
Is that what they scream and shout about?
Do they tell the other children to leave them alone?

Hearing the school children
I wonder where I would've gone to
If I had lost my magic with the other children
And how fortunate I am to be who I am.

Hearing the school children
I feel blessed to have had the parents I had
That they did a good job: that I am not someone bad
My behaviour assisted nicely for my own good.

Hearing the school children
I see vivid memories of my young school days
Lucky to be one of the educated ones
Lucky to have had such good school friends.

Hearing the school children
I look at my own children:
What will they gain? What will they achieve?
And how do I encourage them to learn and aim high?

Hearing the school children
I am an old elderly citizen
Who realizes how quickly youth passes
Who realizes how valuable all walks of life are.

Hearing the school children
I imagine them one day flying an airplane
I imagine them one day driving the bus
I imagine them choosing for themselves.

Hearing the school children
Knowing they are the future adults
Knowing they are all here to learn
And knowing grace that childhood made me earn.
