Lonely Winter Poem by Jana Rininger

Lonely Winter

One long, lonely winter
Can make or break a person
Can cause you to change for the better
Can cause your spirit to worsen
I've dodged through all the snowdrifts
Dug with my bare hands at the ice
Fallen face down in the snow
with each breath short and concise

We all make mistakes
This one might push me over
flying past icy road ledges
Who needs a selt belt for cover?
I'd give anything to return to summer
A time free that flew
When we were infinite
A time that belonged me and you

But she's between the yellow lines now
and I fear this car's out of control
I spin the wheel hard,
feel the wheels start to roll.
In a flashing burst of light
We're both lost to the darkness
Submerging two souls into shadows,
Never to be put to rest.

This was not what I had planned
Not how it was supposed to be
On an icy black road.
I lost what was left of me.
