Mutual (Song) Poem by Jana Rininger

Mutual (Song)

...If we got another chance
I know we could make this last...

But now all that's left of us
is an empty picture frame
I try to go from day to day
But things just aren't the same.

Don't get me wrong,
the day you came into my life
you saved me from myself
then the day you left cut like a knife.

Really, after two long years
you think I'd be stronger
Think I'd be used to the pain
think I'd be used to the hunger

I'll never forget you
that's impossible to do
Even after the awful things you said
The notes I wrote but never read
Should've slowed down, Should've known
Should've left and gone right home
But how can I when
the only home I ever knew
Was with me the whole time
It was you.

Picking apart pages
looking for the warning signs
everything was perfect
who crossed that first line?

A lonely wintertime can reveal
more than you'd ever want to find
we were so together, infinite,
two cards of a similar kind

Guess I'll just never know
Some things just aren't meant to be
Even if it kills me well, so,
Even if these tears bring me to my knees

But I'll never forget you
that's impossible to do
Even after the awful things you said
The notes I wrote but never read
Should've slowed down, Should've known
Should've left and gone right home
But how can I when
the only home I ever knew
Was with me the whole time
It was you.

If we got another chance
I know we could make this last.
The feelings mutual
So hold on to it fast
