‘I bring you peace with honor, ’ boasted Neville;
‘now go home and get a quiet sleep.’
Make sure, negotiating with the devil,
to have some sleep before you wake and weep,
for man eats man not only on the passes
that snow has blocked––we all remember Donner! ––
but on the heights above the foolish masses
whose quest for peace ignores the need for honor.
Returning from Munich in 1938 after signing an agreement with Hitler on September 29h, Neville Chamberlain told a joyful British public: “My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time...Go home and get a nice quiet sleep.'
