Ode To A Rotten Banana (A Poem Destined For The Mulch Pile) Poem by Chuck Audette

Ode To A Rotten Banana (A Poem Destined For The Mulch Pile)

Rating: 5.0

oh, fruit of the Musa acuminata,
I confess I hardly knew ye
plucked in the green of your life
and possessed of sweet triploidy

my patient ways to wait
as you ripened in my desk drawer
but t'was such an awful fate
when I remembered you no more

Enclosed in the dark, your once green skin
turned a lighter, luscious yellow
alas! if only I had been
a brighter, better fellow

I wasn't there, anymore, to see
you get your first faint freckle
from good to bad metaphorically
as you turned to Hyde from Jekyll

I returned from my week-long vacation
and my co-workers gave a glare
'Spontaneous Generation'
seemed to come from my desk here

but time flies and fruit flies, too
and my prize shall go untasted
tis a mushy goodbye to rotten you
your appeal so sadly wasted.

[With thanks to J. Zaritsky & E.LeClerc Sorry this one sat around so long (no pun intended) ]

I was actually writing about a banana earlier myself. I had one for breakfast which was still semi-green at the top and my mind went soaring... Then I decided the only thing the poem was suitable for was a soar into my garbage bin. I enjoyed your poem (much, much more than my own.)

Glad you left this to ripen in your mind - there is more than a bit of mulch going on here Chuck, original imagery, thoughfully composed and laced with your delightful humour. I hate bananas but I love this poem. Justine :)

Eventually, the potion began to run out, and Jekyll was unable to find a key ingredient to make more. His ability to change back from Hyde into Jekyll slowly vanished. Jekyll writes that even as he composes his letter he knows that he will soon become Hyde permanently, and he wonders if Hyde will face execution for his crimes or choose to kill himself. Jekyll notes that, in any case, the end of his letter marks the end of the life of Dr. Jekyll. With these words, both the document and the novel come to a close.....OK, YEAH. I THINK i got confused when you switched from/to to to/from. quite clever in order to make the rhyme! and my co-workers gave a glare 'Spontaneous Generation' seemed to come from my desk here ...............you don't want: ...my desk there? hmmm? =============================================== sweet triploidy? i looked up triploidy (Googled) , and wonder if i should have kept looking. but since i only came upon your poem whilst on my way to someone else's, i won't spend THAT much time here! :) Signs and symptoms Many organ systems are affected by triploidy, but the central nervous system and skeleton are the most severely and obviously affected. Common central nervous system defects seen in triploidy include holoprosencephaly, hydrocephalus (water on the brain) , ventriculomegaly, Arnold-Chiari malformation, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and neural tube defects. Skeletal manifestations include cleft lip/palate, hypertelorism, club foot, and syndactyly of fingers three and four. Congenital heart defects, hydronephrosis, omphalocele, and meningocele (spina bifida) are also common. Cystic hygromas occur but are uncommon. Triploid fetuses have intrauterine growth restriction beginning early in the pregnancy, as early as 12 weeks, and does not affect the head as severely as the body. Oligohydramnios, low levels of amniotic fluid, is common in triploid pregnancies.[1] Placental abnormalities are common in triploidy. Most frequently, the placenta is enlarged and may have cysts within. In some cases, the placenta may be unusually small, having ceased to grow.[1] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - this is very entertaining and shall grace MyPoemList. some favorite lines: but time flies and fruit flies, too and my prize shall go untasted tis a mushy goodbye to rotten you your appeal so sadly wasted. i'll try to remember to taste more of yours another time. :) one year when i was between wives [no, not THAT way! ] i noticed a very strange odor in my apartment. finally i sought it and found it emanating from a winter coat hanging in a closet; it was no longer winter. inside a pocket i found a plastic bread bag containing a sq

Utterly uncanny. Honestly, I swear to you, I came across this whilst eating a banana in the autumn of it's life! Loved it, and the poem. So, is this banana now writing songs backwards? (decomposing?) Ez
