Prices Of Yesterday Poem by Randy McClave

Prices Of Yesterday

I still remember when I was a teen
And the cost of living prices I had seen,
I still remember some of the cost
Now as I look back, I am now at a complete loss.
A can of pop then cost just 0.15 cents
I still can remember that expense,
And 60 cents was what we paid for a gallon of milk
Now it's as expensive as silk.
Sugar was just 39 cents for 3 pounds
24,000 dollars was the cost of a house in most towns,
Eggs was just 60 cents a dozen
And every Sunday after church we'd feed my cousin.
25 cents was the price for a loaf of bread
Only 25 cents as I remember, and have said,
Movie tickets were just about 1.55
Gasoline was 36 cents a gallon when we took a drive.
My dad earned yearly less than 10 thousand dollars
And I still remember about high prices were his screams and hollers,
And it was just 59 cents for 5 pounds of flour
Minimum wage was then just 2.10 an hour.
6 cents was a postage stamp's price
And a dollar was for a 10 pound bag of rice,
This was then the cost of living
And still we are complaining and complaining and grief giving.
Now I think back when my father was just a lad
And the low prices that he then had,
And then maybe how his father told him a story
About all the lower prices when he was a young boy.
Remember this to all those who truly does care
The rich will always want to be a millionaire,
And no matter how sneaky or devious or stealthy
Businesses and companies will do all they can to be wealthy.
