Recalling
recalling beauty
leaps from cliff to
cliff
recalling beauty
lights
from star to star
recalling beauty
on its tenterhooks
recalling beauty on the
plain of sorrows
recalling beauty
on the plain of sighs
recalling beauty,
love, in lover's breasts
the stars became diamonds
the moon
a jewel of the far East
the style of verse
was changed:
more Eastern notes
were heard and
more Sub-Conscious
floated in the air

This poem had a very specific effect on me. I read through it, and paused over the closing lines which puzzled me. THEN I realized the effect it had had - there is a multitude of beautiful things recalled in its lines, so many things, in other words, to be grateful for, so many things given outright, no strings attached, no recompense required. Just appreciation. As for those closing lines, I think now the reference to the East shows there are additional beauties in regions distant from our western world, and the reference to the subconscious shows they even extend into the psyche. EVER BEGIN THE PRAISE YOU CANNOT COMPLETE, wrote Rilke. Your poem does this.
