The Forgotten Poem by Mariam de Haan

The Forgotten

I know a land that was built on genocide.
Where the people close their eyes,
And choose to believe their government's lies.

Where all of the power
Is given to the foreigner,
And the Natives are robbed of land and culture.

And we have the audacity
To call it 'the land of the free'.
Have we forgotten history?
A population wiped out by gunpowder and disease.

Ah! Of course history is written by the victor,
Is that why we no longer need to fight this war?
We have accepted the unfair.

Columbus 'discovered' the continent.
So the Natives deserve nothing more than settlements.
We celebrate thanksgiving for them as a compliment.
And here a gift of extra unemployment.

In this age and generation
Doesn't it matter that some get less education?
These are the true forefathers of the American nation
And their governmental budget is less than parks and recreation.

Are we too stupid to see?
The ongoing American inequality.
If there are still Native Americans wallowing in poverty,
How dare you call it 'the land of the free'?

The star-spangled banner has lost it honour.
The declaration of independence is flawed at the core.
The founding father were fakers.
For all these symbols have forgotten the ancestor.

America never gained independence
Because the Native Americans are still serving their sentence.
