The Lioness Poem by Brady Scott

The Lioness

It's dark in the jungle in the heat of the night
Where crickets are singing and bats take flight
An owl swoops past - after rodents that creep
Lying still in a tree the Lioness is asleep.

She's dreaming of hunting for food in the sun
And hiding from poachers who hunt with a gun
When the day breaks she will seek out her prey
To give her the strength to live another day.

She wakes with a yawn as the sun comes around
She stretches her body upon the dry ground
She gets to her feet and lets out a roar
As she greets the new day, as she goes to explore.

Out on the Savanna she looks for her pride
As she scans the horizon - her eyes open wide.
She runs as she sees them, it's been more than a day
Since the poachers had chased her and scared her away.

Now back with her family- the lion and cubs
Just like a kitten she purrs and she rubs.
She's back to protect them as best as she can
From the poacher out there with the gun in his hand.
