Children Awakening In Adult Lives Poem by RoseAnn V. Shawiak

Children Awakening In Adult Lives

Children awakening in their adult lives, wondering
where life has gone, hiding leaving them bereft
without being able to experience what they had al-
ways dreamt of doing.

Looking ahead, not able to see into the distance or
future, having missed the best parts of their lives
while sacrificing through hardships.

Mis-stepping at times, not focused on where they were
going or doing, dreams now all tattered and torn, miss-
ing their times from the past.

Now just staring into the darkness of nights that keep
them hidden, wanting and yearning more from life, yet
having missed their chances.

Getting into alcohol, sex or drugs, wasting their time
in life with things that took away their freedom, self-
respect, self-confidence, friends, family, loved ones.

Now having no way to recapture the essence of their
lives, being on their last shore in life and standing
in front of their final sunsetical horizon.
