Fearing The Risk Of Love Poem by RoseAnn V. Shawiak

Fearing The Risk Of Love

Every time you come near or get close, I run away, afraid to
take the risk of loving you.

Rejection is just too hard to take from anyone, it's never
handled too well.

Letting you know the truth, which is really wanting you close,
while pushing you away.

Seeing if you will stand the test of time or just go away,
tired of playing guessing games.

Trying to figure out why, sometimes getting close for a
while and it feels good, afterwards, apprehension fills me
and I flee quickly on foot.

Wanting your love, reaching out slowly, hesitantly, waiting
for you to hold onto me in return.

Never letting go, holding me close to your heart as a life-
long love.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Young love is what inspired this poem. An innocent, becoming aware of what being in love seemed to mean. A giving up of oneself just to be with another. A very scary proposition to a young woman of 19.

WANTING YOUR LOVE, REACHING OUT SLOWLY, HESITANTLY - When a person has doubts about self or that other person over there, this is probably the best approach because it cuts down the middle of two dangerous actions. One is surrendering completely despite one's doubts; the other, running away because the fear takes over. But dealing with this crisis is inevitable regardless of age. I hope this 19-year-old found a satisfactory modus operandi for herself, B-U-T if she didn't and her heart was broken - she will recover, we all do, we may need help - a parent, a friend, a therapist, a cat, chocolate, writing a poem, you get the point. That's the thing that makes ROMANTIC LOVE, the invention of western poets really, so dangerous and so wonderful. If you want to play it safe and avoid heart-break and heart-recovery, get an arranged marriage. But the wonder of ROMANCE is so, so, so enticing!
