Dr Ian Inkster Biography

Brought up and lived in Warrington, Edinburgh, Khartoum, Lowestoft, Harlow, Edinburgh, Sydney, Nottingham, Kaohsiung, London. Professor of economic history, history, social studies of science, international studies and global history 1973 forwards. Teaching at undergraduate, graduate and post-doc levels with special reference to methodology, Japan, China and East Asia, Economic History, International Relations and Global History. Scholarly interests also include sociology, literature, anthropology and economic development.

Have been a visiting professor in following - Visiting Positions (Selected) Senior Visiting Fellow, History and Sociology of Science, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA 1976; Visiting Research Fellow, Institute of Developing Economies, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan 1979-80; Visiting Faculty Professor, Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, Japan 1980; Visiting Fellow, Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, Oxford University and St. Antony's College, Oxford University 1983-4; Visiting Scientist, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, India 1987; Visiting Professor The Achievement Project, Oxford 1993-94; Visiting Professor Institute of European Studies, Nanhua University, Taiwan,1995-2002; Visiting Professor of Global History, Department of International Cultural Studies, ; Leverhulme Visiting Fellow to Global Economic History Network, LSE, London, January-March 2006; Visiting Professor, Wenzao Ursuline University of International Studies, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, November-December 2005 and thereafter from 2009 to 2014 as Full Professor.

Editor since 2001 of established leading UK journal, History of Technology. Founder and Co-Editor 1998-2002 of Asian Journal of International Studies, (UK and Taiwan) , Reviews Editor, Social Studies of Science, London (1988-1992) :

Other interests include journalistic writing and editorials, songwriting, music generally and fitness training.

My songwriting, lyrical and poetic work embraces most varieties of music from children's to blues, ballads, pop, political, world. On Youtube and elsewhere you will find me under such key words as Roald Dahl, Japan, technology etc, and my google entries are many if only because my nmae is by no means a common one!
