Rumpa Das Poems

This year is different -
The man told his woman
As they sat in my shade,
And I casually waved my slender leaves
...

Who says the world is coming to an end?
Where is that affliction which love cannot mend?

Who says a virus has power like Devil?
...

As the last rays of the russet sunset kiss the dismal coconut fronds,
Evening descends on earth, yet radiating myriad hued bonds.
Bonds of blood, bonds of love, bonds of care and bonds of trust -
And more such bonds of habits and lust, bonds that hurt and bonds that rust.
...

The smell of KeoKarpin in your wet hair every morning
The white patches of Cuticura talc on your sweat- soaked neck
As you hurried to prepare Bapi' s
'Office' er bhaat' and our morning edibles...
...

You left me forever
Ten years ago this day.
Did you think I was strong enough?
I was so tired, ma!

Not all raindrops come together.
Some remain solitary
And fall and fade alone.
Some unite with others they meet

All through the autumn, it waited patiently.
The bougainvillea at my gate, now aged, a bit frail perhaps.
And I waited, with bated breath, to catch her in its glory.
I couldn't give up on her, even though, I knew it was struggling.

And I know
when starlight meets dawn
a new hope is born -

A Tree Poem

This year is different -
The man told his woman
As they sat in my shade,
And I casually waved my slender leaves
To fan them and their tired progeny
In that scorching summer afternoon.

This year is different -
A few men discussed with others
As they lay languid under the dark deaf sky
And I tried to shake a few frail branches
On the hapless hungry humans
Seeking succour and peace on a monsoon night.

This year is different -
A couple of men pushed and shoved themselves
On a screaming young girl, uncovered even by leaves
And I tried in vain to help her -
To save her from the villainous clutches
As they finished their work and set her ablaze
Much before the festival of lights.

This year is different -
Microphones blared and banners flew from my bare branches,
And men and women with covered faces
Listened to voices, muffled, stifled, sinister.
I barely moved a leaf and kept wondering -
Will you spare me and mine this year?
