Ode To An Eraser

In the writing process, the glory often gets misplaced
As we fail to realize the importance of this tool
We forget the errors, the mistakes its erased
Yet remember the end result, in all its misrule

One could tell of the possibilities, endless
Of paper, and its manner: blank and enticing
Or pencil, scribbling away on paper, restless
Converting one's innermost thoughts into writing

But the eraser is sought out when a mistake is made
And in that moment, its virtue is at its peak
But once it is found, and used, it fades
It returns to an existence that is dull and bleak

It offers itself as sacrifice to right our wrongs
And as time goes on, its slowly whittled away
Until proper time has passed, and it no longer belongs
Its pearly white exterior now a muddled grey
