I think Marriott Edgers poems have a touch of reality to them. The Blackpool Circus animals animals could
have been cagedbehind the Marque. The Blackpool Zoo was a fair distance inland from Blackpool. Wallace
was a big attraction at tha Circus. The Ramsbottoms must have lived close to the Circus because Dad sent
Albert back with a shilling to see what the Tigers ccould do!

I have just bought a cd of Stanley Holloway's unforgettable version of 'Albert and the lion' The sleeve notes say this was a real event which happened at London zoo because of the gruesome nature of the subject the location was changed to Blackpool. Holloway chose the audience at the Northern rugby league annual dinner and dance at Newcastle's Grand Hotel to give the performance which was received with great applause. This is a praphrase of the notes on Delta music cd 'The best of Stanley Holloway'. Can anyone confirm this as true and knows any more details of the original event? Margaret Smith

    Albert and The Lion

My brother Don recently added his comments regarding the Marriott Edgar Poem Albert and The Lion. I share his enthusiasm for the classic piece, especially considering the connection with our Grandfather Molyneux of Ribchester, England. I am disappointed, however, that he did not do so using appropriate comments written in Cockney Rhyming Slang. I'll see Don 'baked! '

Magna Carta

I'll tell of the Magna Charter
As were signed at the Barons' command
On Runningmead Island in t' middle of t' Thames
By King John, as were known as "Lack Land."

Some say it were wrong of the Barons
Their will on the King so to thrust,
But you'll see if you look at both sides of the case
That they had to do something, or bust.

For John, from the moment they crowned him,
Started acting so cunning and sly,
Being King, of course, he couldn't do wrong,
But, by gum, he'd a proper good try.

He squandered the ratepayers' money,
All their ...

Albert And The 'Eadsman

On young Albert Ramsbottom's birthday
His parents asked what he'd like most;
He said to see t' Tower of London
And gaze upon Anne Boleyn's ghost.

They thowt this request were unusual
And at first to refuse were inclined,
'Til Pa said a trip t' metrollopse
Might broaden the little lad's mind.
