Drowning

I keep imagining he and I.
Alone, in a cabin.
It’s early May, unseasonably warm,
And a spring rain beats down on the roof.
Our plans to swim in the lake are botched,
So we stay in
Under the covers, on the couch,
A movie playing on his laptop.
We’re together, and we’re happy,
And the entire thing is perfect.

But reality slaps me in the face
And I’m alone

I’m in my room,
Crying as I clutch an old bear.
I hold his armband to my face
Because it smells like him
and it brings me comfort
And memories of before.
And I just want him back
I want to give up,
Lay down and sleep forever
Drowning in his memory
Until he throws me a lifeline
and brings me back to the surface.
