Three little words churned around in my head, and then I said them. I must have said them because you looked at me and your eyes filled with tears. They were out there "I'm leaving you".
You picked up my words and whispered "I know". And suddenly I could breathe again. But the hurt and the pain whistled around us like the beginnings of a hurricane wind, pushing us together. Endless talking going nowhere, trying to find a way back to each other. We could not fix this. I could only see one way out.
When the pain dulled, we found a resolution. Four weeks later we agreed on our terms of separation. I was free.
