A Bottled Butterfly Poem by J.M. Española

A Bottled Butterfly

I am a blue butterfly,
With wings that flutter well,
Yet I’m alone, can't reach the sky
Cause in this bottle I must dwell.

They love the colors of my skin,
My pale and dark blue streaks,
But no one sees, no kith nor kin,
What loneliness to me it gives.

Many want to be like me
So they can fly all day,
But beauty, often, such as thee,
Could never really go our way.

So envious, you are of me,
Cause all you see’s the pretty side,
How lovely must I be to you,
With eyes that of a man who’s blind.

In here, I live in this glass bottle,
For people love to watch me flutter.
I love to see the different mottles,
And hear the praises that they utter.

But I would give up all this beauty,
To see the outside world again,
Oh how lonely it is to be me,
Am I fated to live without a friend?
