A Leaf Fell Poem by Jeff Edwards

A Leaf Fell

I watched as a single leaf fell
And danced upon the wind
What wonder! How to tell
Of how he did so descend?
He fell, then lifted, then floated soft
‘Fore his final plummet to earth
While his brothers still hung aloft
High upon the limb of his birth.

Glancing now above
To his journey’s start,
Wonder if there’s love
Inside a tree’s heart?
A family to miss and to mourn,
And do leaves have a Heaven?
Leaves left looking forlorn
Seemed to me about seven.

Another leaf seemed to tire
Of clinging to the branch tight
And with grace I admire
Followed his brother’s flight
Danced to some soundless tune
And soft on wind did ride
Seemed to me all to soon
Lay at his brother’s side.

What wondrous wisdom has God
So simple and plain to see
That I have to applaud
The grace and the beauty,
Yet the delicate nature
That seems so broken with ease
What through a storm did hang sure
Was now taken by a breeze
