If I speak to you in friendship's name,
You think I speak too coldly
But when I mention Love's devoted flame,
Then you say I speak too boldly.

Between these two unequal fires,
Why doom me undecided?
I'm a friend, if such your heart requires,
But what you seek, is a lover.

Though the wings of Love will brightly play,
When first he comes to your knees,
There's a chance that he may fly away,
As fast as he flies to you.

Which shall it be?
A friendship that like love is warm,
Or a love like friendship steady.
