A Smiling Star (Petrarchan Sonnet) Poem by R. H. Peat

A Smiling Star (Petrarchan Sonnet)

A Smiling Star

She says she sees a smiling star inside
the canopy of tangled trees, and I
ask how a shining star within the sky
can smile at all or even laugh, decide
within the twisted twigs of night to ride
through gloom on glinting sleds of light: to lie
at last amused within her twinkling eye.
She claims this star in focus glimmers wide,
and then insists it smiles just like my heart.
Oh who am I to shroud this hidden spark
aglow within her sight? This star illuminates
her face and touches what's remote in art;
her bright reflection gleams inside the dark
and shines with harmony that resonates.
