Adventures Poem by Lizzie Lum

Adventures

And then it came.
When we least expected it
one week in July
hitching a lift
on the backs of butterflies and magpies
jumbled up in rich kaleidoscopes
full of magic and enchantment
Dazzling patterns bursting with such heat
you felt you needed to resist it
shield yourself from it
fingers clinging to your foundations
turning gripped knuckles pale
afraid that if you actually let go
our fire might burn
And you weren't ready
ready for whatever it was
or is even destined to be
'Timing is everything' you said
so you went on your own adventure
putting ours aside for a little while
as I knowingly stepped out of the way
surrendering to the slog of the spike
but still wished to lend you my compass
the one I had already worn to antique
and kept safely tucked away in my pocket
But in truth I knew
it would be in the stillness
after the winds died down
and the shutters stopped banging
that you would unearth your own
it would actually find you
glistening like dew
sooner or later
through those tender whispers
as they nudged ever closer to your ears
For you would then
know them to be your own
telling you softly
which way you needed to go
With or without me
