Africa, My Africa Poem by Mutwiri wa Nkonge

Africa, My Africa

Africa, my Africa
Africa my motherland
The cradle of mankind
Beauty and awe adorns you
But everything frowns and weeps for you
The pyramids of pharaohs peer sadly
The mummified conquerers,
Thutmose, Akhnaton, Seti, Ramses...
May wake up in protest
Cant you hear the Kruger's elephants
Kicking and trumpeting in rage?
The icy peaks of Kilimanjaro
Melt and weep for you
When the tropical sun shines hard
The shingles of sand of Sahara
Tinkle in rage as wind blows
Beseeching you, wake up!
Take a rightful place among others
How many litres must flow
From Victoria out through Nile?
When shall men walk in dignity
Across the savanna and velds?
When shall peace prevail
In the Equatorial jungles
When shall prosperity come?
When, when shall it happen...?
