All The Difference Poem by Mary Champion

All The Difference

98.8 percent!
I'm talking DNA -
Incredible to think
that's how much Man
has in common with
his distant cousin - the Chimpanzee.

1.2 percent!
Is that really all there is
between a gibbering ape
and the self-styled Lord of Creation?

I'm searching for a metaphor here-

Formula 1!
That's it!
The cars are much of a muchness -
very little divides them.
The gaps between winners and losers
come down to luck and the driver.

And that's how it is with Men and Chimps -
luck and the driver -
random mutation
and the human spirit.
