An Effort To Explain The Meaningless. Poem by Allan Thorne

An Effort To Explain The Meaningless.

The poet reads
A lengthy poem
Speculating on the meaning
Of a tsunami
That has wiped out
One hundred thousand people
Men, woman, children,
The rich and the poor,
The righteous
And the iniquitous
Alike
In ten minutes
On a sunny afternoon.

The poem is long.
The logic is soon lost
In loops and swirls
Of language.

In the end
The poet is satisfied
That he has puzzled it out,
How a loving just god
Could do such a thing.

I am not convinced in the least
You simply cannot talk
A loving god.
A just god,
And a homicidal tsunami
Into the same place
At the same time.

Without sounding
Like the beaten wife who
Babbles on to the police
About how her drunken husband
Really loves her.
