And The Curtain Falls... Poem by TMA

And The Curtain Falls...

It’s the final scene of the final act
The denouement, the conclusion
And the audience is on the edge
Of its collective seat
Eyes wide, mouths gaping;
Some shaking their heads in disbelief
Others nodding knowingly –
Like; “I told you that’d happen.”

“I can’t believe it, ” one says. “What a terrible ending! ”
Shaking her head in disbelief.
“I saw it coming, ” says another.
“I’ve seen other shows by this Playwright
Ant they all end the same.”
A few people agree – it was largely a remake;
Same old plot, same old characters
Same old mistakes, same old ending…

“It is a tragedy.” Says one, sniffing.
“No, no, it’s a comedy! ” chuckles another
“What an anticlimax! ” another said, disappointed
“It was EPIC! ” exclaims another.
And as they think back
On the tears, the laughs, the twists and the turns
Grudgingly – or emphatically – they agree
That it was just about worth it.

And the curtain falls
And the cast takes a bow
Some jump to their feet
And applaud enthusiastically
Others remain in their seats
Clapping politely
Yet others couldn’t wait to leave
And are halfway out the door already.

The theatre’s emptying out
Yet one man remains in his seat
Still staring, dumbstruck, at the empty stage.
“That’s it? THAT’S 2010? ! ”
He asks incredulously.
“I want my money back! !
“It was nothing like the posters promised! ”
And he hurries off to find the manager.

The “Now Showing: 2010” posters
Are being taken down, and already others
Are being put up in their place.
It remains to be seen if the new show
Is, as promised, “2011”
Or merely “2010: The Sequel”
But whatever the show,
We’ll be glad to watch it –

Besides, there’s only one alternative –
All the other theatres
Have only one show;
“Death.”

Now showing in 3-D.
