Another Atheist’s Prayer? Poem by Dan Reynolds

Another Atheist’s Prayer?

Another atheist’s prayer?

The comfort which a stranger seems to bring
may raise suspicions in the cynic’s eye.
Their hymn sheets we are hesitant to sing
until their actions we can justify.

What motives might they have to show such care
with no perceived rewards stood to be gained?
Do they have morals which we cannot share
because our view is blinkered, blighted, stained?

I guess we must hold distrust in regard,
and though we fear our own values are true,
in secret shadows, prayers which we find hard
to utter loud, with naught to pray out to.

Thank God- -less men of sober sanity
whose deeds are meant,
with pure intent
of our humanity.
