As Slippery As An Eel Poem by Robert R. Railey

As Slippery As An Eel

As Slippery as an Eel

Old George was an excellent salesman, alright, he could motivate his customers and associates alike
He also managed to keep his hair well-trimmed and he always dressed to the nth
And then once he'd gained a person's trust he was able to make them think that all their dreams would come true
His motto was simple: he knew what he wanted and he wasn't about to let anything like morality stand in his way
For you see, his thoughts and his plans were always on the future and his long-range goals were a must
Unfortunately, though, his plans never included anybody else, and if you were foolish enough to stay on board then you would surely be left out to sea
Old George was so good at persuading people he could win over almost everybody; but then when it came time to settle up with the money he had his own unique way of sharing; and generally speaking, the lion's share of the money always stayed in his pockets and not yours
That one particular venture is history, he'd say, but the next time you'll be the big winner
But if you stayed on board, and continued to play, then the future would just be more misery
It's true, of course, that people would occasionally ask themselves just how someone like that could stay in business for you'd have to think that a person of that ilk would eventually have to end up on posters, wouldn't you?
But year after year, old George passed the muster, and he continued to bilk all comers
And even though it might have seemed unkindly to some it took ill health and karma to quiet his glorious luster; and since then, his sheen has been permanently dulled
So nowadays Old George is just an old empty shell of his once brilliant self and he has lost almost all of his bluster
