At Home Poem by bob barci

At Home

Rating: 4.5

While at home
I wonder what can be done for me.
With leg in cast
there’s nothing much I can do.
Attempting to keep it elevated
I spend much time in bed.
There, I tend to sleep uncomfortably
while trying to get leg in a certain position.
Cartoons and a soap opera help.
In between,
albums and 45’s do the trick.
Movies on video are watched over and over again.
On the warm days
I sit on the porch
and watch the passersby.
On cool and windy mornings
you can find me on the couch
waiting for the mailman.
Somehow I seem to have lost my appetite,
and anyways, I’d rather sleep than eat.
I let my beard grow in
for something to do.
Friends help out
by doing what they can.
But I am tired
of staying at home
and relying on others.
I need to get out
and bring in a paycheck.
I grow gray wondering
how I’ll pay my rent and bills.
Being at home all the time
isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.
