Beggar Poem by Katy Fulker

Beggar

You look and I
Avert my eyes,
So you cannot see the complexities of guilt and fear
Unjust and ignorant of sight.

You ask and I
Speak only
The words engraved in the loosened, whitewashed hearts
of the weak and numb:
'Sorry'.
