Beneath a copper-coloured sky
I stood and watched the daylight die.
I asked myself the reason why
I saw this copper glow on high.
The weather had been hot and dry,
wind whipped up dust to make it fly
and bushfires too would help supply
the particles that made the sky
seem all suffused with henna dye.
That summer night in mid-July
I stood and watched the daylight die.
As copper slowly faded I
perceived a honey coloured sky
fade into black with light's last sigh.
