Best Friend Poem by Jean Renwick

Best Friend

The first light before dawn
Reminds me of your eyes darkened by desire
And cloudy with passion.
Around me is the soft trembling of a new morning
As the single, hesitant birdsong swells into a chorus.
Who’d have thought the blush of sunrise would
Match so perfectly the pink of your…lips.
Ah! 'Friend'. An inadequate word we are forced to utter
Lest our love become tarnished in the harsh glare of day.
Becoming more was too easy a thing, a pairing
Predestined in some far away time.
We know our boundaries and take pleasure in testing them.
I think - two hands are better than one;
And yours, so graceful and sure,
Hold my heart and my world.
