Breaking The Pattern Poem by Mary Champion

Breaking The Pattern

Once carelessly spawned out of chaos,
cast adrift in an ocean of fear,
our ignorant weakness betrayed us
for nothing was constant or clear.

But the comforting routine of patterns
calmed the panic that threatened our mind,
allowed us to harness our passions
let us see where we once had been blind.

Compulsively made our own order,
built a comforting fortress of laws,
risked death to defend the stout border
that sheltered us from those wild shores.

Discovered the patterns in numbers,
numbed the terror that chaos provokes,
enslaving ourselves to the wonders
of computers and their secret codes.

But deep in the heart of our kingdom
is a flaw where the darkness gets in,
where there is no pattern or rhythm.
And it's here where the troubles begin.

It's here where our smart calculations
and the tables of coming events
are found to have grave limitations,
for that part of us doesn't make sense.

It's here where the robotic patterns
that have served us so well in their time
give way to the conscious decisions
of a far more impressive Deep Mind.

There's one thing that can't be encoded,
can't be scraped from the Net by A I -
that's bitter experience loaded
in real humans scared stiff they might die.

I T cannot fathom the weirdness
of the crazy absurd human heart,
I T cannot cope with its darkness
and the risk it could tear us apart.

Computers might know more than humans,
but there's no understanding involved,
so they can't provide the solutions
when it's us who's the problem to solve.
