Broken Wings Won'T Fly Poem by Debbie Steyn

Broken Wings Won'T Fly

We started out great and all seemed fine
we chatted, we laughed, talked for hours over a glass of wine
My days would be lonely when you were not there
But then I started to notice that look when you stare

It scared a little, not too much to bear
I reassured myself that all you do is care

Now I am scared, im fearing for my life
the pain you inflict on me, is worse than a knife

No marks, bruises or even droplets of blood
just tears and more tears, my own burning flood

My wings you have taken, first plucking them clear
then breaking each bit day by day, installing more fear

My wings are now hanging
facing down at the ground
too hurt and ashamed
too scared to be found

Lock me up and please let me die
There aren't any more tears for me to cry

Battered, beaten broken and sore
my wings are broken
and they fly no more
