By My Side Poem by Kay Hollister

By My Side

If I could control your breath,
You may still be alive.
If I could control your steps,
You wouldn't have been paralized.
If I could have been the one in that car,
Me, instead of you,
You might still be here today,
By my side, that is the truth.

I promised you a promise,
That I wish I could have kept,
And because I didn't keep it,
By your side I wept.
Even though people tell me,
'Hun, it ain't your fault',
Deep inside my heart I know,
I'm the one that caused it all.

I wonder if things will ever get better,
Seeing as you are gone,
Even though people stand by me,
Hugging me and telling me it isn't my fault,
I wish that you were here,
I wish you were the one,
Wiping away all of my tears,
still, by my side.
