Cantina Poem by Alejandro Torres

Cantina

Why do I love her
Foolhardy I seem to be
Stuck on smiling eyes
And a flashing smile
Like being struck by Zeus
A bolt through the heart
Every time
I wish there was a potion
Some magical spell
To counter her effects
Hemlock
Or a woman similar
Who would put me out of her misery
Listen to ancient songs
Passed down from generation to generation
Watch the tears pass
One after the other
Like the words a poor man sings
About a love similar to mine
Of a death neither of us
Have died
But the lifetime of difference
Seems to connect like a machine
Never could
And if I sat with that poor man
I’d lament with him
Shot for shot
Cutting our lips on broken glasses
And dreams the like
To erase kisses that were never true
From lips that were never ours
Crying out to the world
We’re fine
While inside we die
Shot for shot
