Carrion Poem by Roger Gerald Hicks

Carrion

Before, they were carrion
living off the leavings
fanged bones, smelly offing
then one day, the very first
a bunch, so hungry they
lost all fear, attacked, killed-
more important- defended
and laughed the first time.
It hurt, oh, it hurt, laughing.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
100,000 years ago, people had no speech, barely understood fire, and lived feast or famine lives- then they learned to laugh.
