It is 2020, our whole world is changed,
Social distancing, people estranged.
A virus spreading fast across the land,
Don't even think about shaking my hand.
We knew not, of what was to come,
Taken seriously at the beginning... only by some!
Our leaders true values, came to the fore,
They had one decision upon their door.
To spend big and choose their countries health,
Or take a risk on sustaining economic wealth.
Australia were first to call "global pandemic",
This beyond the limits of other nations epistemic.
Quickly activating their impressive emergency response.
While the rest of the world were in a state of nonchalance.
The most powerful person on earth that day,
More of a social influencer, than a leader, some might say.
When asked then to comment, his message was clear,
He said 'it's like a miracle, it will disappear.'
Every news medium is now bombarded with figures of loss.
Mourning families remain distant, their loved ones beneath the moss.
Our thoughts and condolences will only go so far,
For those who have had to walk behind, a disinfected, funeral car.
Guidelines differ, each place has their own death tally.
Although some people prefer to focus on ratings or their next political rally.
Another view is to phase back to our 'new normal', day by day.
Slowly ensuring one more life is saved along the way.
As this continues on for some time, we are all learning to cope,
It's our heroes, our healthcare workers, providing the hope.
Light is now shone on those that work in roles we deem essential,
Our appreciation for these people shall no longer be kept confidential.
While forced in to this unusual environment of physical isolation.
Opportunity to reflect on what is real in life and what is just decoration.
What do I miss, who do I miss, those are important questions to sound.
Realising what I value and care about most in life, is the silver lining I have found.
May you find yours. Stay safe.
