Certainty Poem by robert dickerson

Certainty

I lay me down each dusk in sorrow's pain
I hear the water dropping from the wash
onto the floorboards, dolorous drum, and watch
the failing sunlight falter through the pane.
The hunger in my belly I have fed
with just a slice of cheese, a shred of bread-
the hunger in my heart continues on
it craves a supper it can never own.
Then, a dream-plagued sleep I must endure
turning and tossing, till the morning comes
when uncertainty begins again:
I could endure it, I am very sure,
the water drops, the morsels and the crumbs,
if certainty tomorrow were my gain.
