Change Of Tactics Required Poem by Mary Champion

Change Of Tactics Required

Step by bloody step;
inch by brutal inch-
ruthless eyes fixed on our prey,
we battled our way
to the top of the food chain.

Piece by shattered peace;
hour by war torn hour,
heedless of the deadly fire,
climbing ever higher
and ignoring all the pain.

Now victorious-
evolution's peak,
it begins to fall apart.
We notice our heart
and the price it had to pay.
.
Step by bloody step;
inch by brutal inch-
for we had no other choice,
driven by the voice
of our serpent DNA.

Competition ruled.
Merciless we fought
until we had won the war.
and chalked up our score-
the kings of all creation.

But now, how to hold
what is dear to us?
For our foes are all slain -
save one that remains -
our unthinking aggression.

Step by bloody step;
inch by brutal inch-
ruthlessly we made our way
till we stand this day-
the lords of all we can see.

Can we now recall
the mad dogs of war?
Can we change - cooperate?
Can we love instead of hate?
a band of brothers
united in victory.
