Chivalry Poem by Olaniyi Adekanye

Chivalry

In the college
Chivalrous his name was
Because he loved women.

What is it
If he loved the 'folk'
That much?

They were
They are
They will be
Always
The victims
Victims of chauvinism
Of oppression
But not subscription
Of repression
But not celebration
Of enjoyment
Like the farmer’s fowls
In the end
He slaughters
And not appreciated
For their great feat
If not physical
Or intellectual
At least emotional

Even kings
The powerful
The influential
The Devil incarnates
They subdue
Subdue with their platinum gift
Of tenderness and emotion
Of paragon countenance
Stunning curves and
Sibilant voices
Like amplified twitters
Tranquilizing the insomniac
Great warriors
“I cannot betray them”, he said
Chivalrously.
