Come Daybreak Poem by Janine Alyssa Navarro

Come Daybreak

Come daybreak,
come midnight
I seek;
I feel sharp sand
seep cleverly into
my rib cage.
The finish line
comes to view
but reaching out,
my hands
turn to embers.
I march on
though this flesh
turns nasty,
wounds grow
they swell,
turning me inside out.
Air strips itself
from me;
I writhe in pain
assorted nails
daub at my lungs.
Cynical Life
puts me
to the test,
I’m brought
right
back down
on my scraped knees.
I haven’t
much time to spare
but I’m getting
close enough, closer
to the gold.
Everything owned
was at loss,
a body wasted
and burned,
the mind’s gates
to insanity
swing wide open;
is this home?
