Conscience Dreams Poem by Nia Schexnider

Conscience Dreams

There we were - in my dream,
Yet you were being so mean,
So I left to get some air,
Where I went, I did not care.
*
I walked for a while just soaking in the dream,
Thinking things were what they seemed.
Until I came to the house of the old woman.
She smiled and waved.
*
There was a ball cage in her yard,
With bouncy (workout type) balls two stories high.
A fish tank on the curb, with a shattered side.
And it took days to arrive at the top of her stairs.
*
She invited me in for tea,
I asked her what happened to her fish tank.
She pointed and said that I could take a few fish,
I looked back and the tank was holding water,
Duct tape where the broken glass was.
*
Into the big house we went,
I was surpirsed by the room called vent,
We entered into a wonderful warm bouncy room,
and jumped to our hearts content.
*
But as the sunlight faded,
and the balls deflated,
I decided it was time to go home.
and I walked there alone.
*
I arrived to an unpleasant scene,
You continued to be mean,
Oh, if only this were a dream,
then maybe the meaning wouldn't be so clean.
*
I left, distressed - swearing to never return again,
Sad for my loss, and for you,
because there is nothing I can do,
I'll miss you.
*
I found the road I had taken before,
And quietly closed that door,
I went and met my friend,
She will be with me til the end.
*
We sat down for a cup of tea,
I saw all I needed to see.
